FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE IS THE FOUNDATION FOR OUR APPROACH FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH AND WELL BEING
Our Nurse Practitioner Kathy is a member of the Institute of Functional Medicine and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. She has taken various courses that allow her to address the concerns of her patients by using a Functional Medicine approach to care.
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is an integrative, science-based approach with a focus on identifying and addressing the root cause of the patient’s primary concern. This specific approach utilizes conventional western medicine and integrative medicine that addresses the whole person, taking into account genetics, environment and lifestyle. At GLO Antiaging Nurse Practioner Kathy utilizes Functional Medicine to test and treat:
- Food sensitivity
- Gut health
- Sex hormones and BioIdentical Hormone Replacement Therapy or BHRT
- Adrenal function
- Chronic Inflammation
- Weight Management and Nutrition
Symptoms that indicate you may have an issue with your sex hormones, thyroid or adrenals include:
- Night sweats
- Hot flashes
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Painful menstrual cycles
- Adult acne
- Abnormal hair growth or hair loss
- Cognitive issues
- Low muscle mass
- Decreased libido
- Weight gain
- Sleep issues
- PMS or painful periods
- And many more
Functional Medicine Practitioners spend time with their patients to take thorough histories and engage with their patients to create a therapeutic partnership. Patients are encouraged to actively participate in the process.
Lifestyle changes are a key focus of every individualized treatment plan, which includes nutrition, physical activity, sleep and stress management/relaxation. How we cope with and manage stress has an impact on our hormones and overall health. This will all be taken into consideration when creating a treatment plan that will work for your individual situation and life. The end result for the patient is to improve their overall feeling of health and wellness.
BioIdentical Hormone Replacement Therapy
At Glo, we provide an individualized approach to optimizing hormones naturally that is safe and effective. Bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure as our natural hormones. They are often formulated by a specialized compounding pharmacy. Some are also patented pharmaceuticals. These may be part of your treatment plan. In addition, key nutrients and lifestyle factors may have an impact on stabilizing your hormones, which may also be incorporated.
Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal axis and Thyroid health
The hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis is a feedback loop between these organs. Our HPA axis controls our central stress response system and helps regulate our bodily process including digestion, immune system, moods and emotions, sexuality and energy. Our thyroid gland is also relevant to this system and can impact our metabolism and energy levels. A complex interaction of organs and hormones that have an impact on our health and vitality. When creating your individualized treatment plan, we will look at the factors that are impacting this system and work with you to make improvements.
Weight Management and Nutrition
Our diet and nutritional plans are customized to address each patients specific health and weight goals. The ketogenic diet is all the rage at the moment. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people doing a “dirty keto” diet, which can have negative health consequence. At GLO, we can help you successfully do “clean keto” or suggest different approaches to your weight management plan. What is the right nutritional approach for one patient, will not be for another; this is why we have numerous treatment plans. We also incorporate intermittent fasting and fasting mimicking diets, if appropriate as a treatment option for you.
